The new Simpler Recycling regulations, which came into force in April 2025 under the Environment Act 2021, have introduced mandatory separate collections for food waste, recyclable materials, and garden waste across England. While designed to simplify recycling and reduce landfill waste, the rules prohibit several common garden items from recycling bins.
Garden Items No Longer Accepted for Recycling
According to the UK Government's website, the following garden waste materials are no longer accepted for recycling collection:
- Animal bedding
- Bulky waste, including garden furniture and fencing
- Garden tools and other gardening equipment
- Plant pots
- Plastic items such as bottles
- Sand
- Sawdust
- Stone, gravel, or bricks
- Tea bags or coffee grounds
- Branches and trees over a certain size must be cut into smaller pieces per local guidance
Separate Collections Required
Under the new rules, food and garden waste must now be collected separately from other recyclable materials. Ideal Home highlighted these items as frequently encountered during household clear-outs, as reported by the Liverpool Echo.
Local Authority Exemptions
Some local authorities are exempt from these regulations until at least 2040. Residents are advised to check with their local council whether the rules apply in their area.
Kitchen Items Also Affected
Earlier this year, the Government outlined six kitchen products that are no longer recyclable under the updated rules: drinking glasses, glass cookware, ceramic crockery, cutlery, and pots and pans.
