UK Schools Relax Uniform Rules as Temperatures Reach 37C

The UK is facing an amber weather warning for extreme heat, with Liverpool expecting temperatures up to 37C this week. Schools across the country have begun issuing guidance on uniform policies to help pupils cope with the severe conditions.

Official Guidance on School Uniforms in Hot Weather

The Met Office has forecast "hot and humid weather" with "exceptionally warm temperatures" both day and night. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has published updated guidance for schools during a heatwave. The Department for Education (DfE) stated: "During hot weather, we don't normally advise schools to close. This is because school attendance is the best way for pupils to learn and reach their potential, and hot weather can usually be managed safely."

The DfE encouraged school leaders to "take any steps necessary to make sure children are safe and comfortable." Official guidance, already shared by many schools, suggests that "schools could consider relaxing uniform rules during hot weather to make sure pupils are comfortable."

Practical Measures for Keeping Children Safe

Children are advised to wear loose, light-coloured clothing and wide-brimmed sunhats. When outdoors, teachers should encourage pupils to stay in the shade. The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) recommends avoiding vigorous physical activity on very hot days, with lessons adapted to sedentary activities.

In Merseyside, many schools have implemented relaxed uniform rules. While some allow PE kits, others require regular uniform but without blazers or jumpers. Policies vary, so parents are advised to check with individual schools.

Examples of School Policies in Merseyside

King's Leadership Academy Hawthornes in Bootle posted: "This week due to the hot weather blazers and jumpers are not required in school or social times. Students are not permitted to wear PE kit or trainers and students are able to bring their own water in as always."

Litherland High School stated: "This week is set to be a hot one. Students may leave blazers at home for this week. All other uniform expectations remain in place. Please consider using sun cream and ensure you have plenty of water."

St Hildas CE High School said: "PE kit can be worn all week. Students should bring their blazer (no need to wear it). Please remember: wear sun cream, bring a refillable water bottle. Let's stay cool and hydrated!"
