The Environment Agency has taken enforcement action against a waste company after more than 50 complaints about 'offensive odours' in just 10 days. In a statement, the agency said it has ordered the removal of 'some waste' from the Lester Road site of Kenny Waste Management Limited in Little Hulton, Salford.
Partial permit suspension issued
A 'partial permit suspension notice' has been issued, restricting waste handling and treatment activities on a specific area of the site. The notice was issued on 8 October and took effect immediately. The operator must also remove waste from the area by 13 November and carry out odour monitoring and put odour control measures in place.
Investigation after complaints
The action follows an investigation into reports of 'foul smells' in the area. The Manchester Evening News previously reported how locals had complained of a 'rancid eggs' and 'burnt sulphur' stench wafting over Little Hulton. Between September 25 and October 5, the agency received 52 complaints about offensive odour in the area.
Company response and next steps
Jeni Brittlebank, Area Environment Manager at the Environment Agency, said: "Communities should not have to tolerate offensive odours and we know that it’s having a significant impact on those living, working and going to school in the area of Little Hulton. Ensuring waste is managed in a way that protects people and the environment is our priority. We'll continue to monitor the situation in the area closely and we won't hesitate to consider further action against those believed to be responsible if the situation does not improve."
