Peace lilies (Spathiphyllum wallisii) are among the most popular houseplants worldwide, known for their lush green leaves and striking white spathes. While resilient and low-maintenance, they require specific care to flower. A peace lily that refuses to bloom can be frustrating, but a mild 'stress reset' may help.
The Mild 'Stress Reset' Method
Professional gardener Chad Massura told Real Simple: "If your plant is happy but just not blooming, it might need a little extra push to get there." He recommends slightly reducing watering for a few weeks, then resuming normal care. This method should only be tried after exploring other factors like consistent watering, adequate light (10-12 hours daily), proper pot size, normal household temperatures, average humidity, and occasional fertiliser.
Normal Watering Routine for Peace Lilies
According to Gardeners' World: "Watering is arguably the most important aspect in a peace lily's care regime. Only rehydrate the soil once the top third has dried out – check if the soil is dry by feeling the compost on top, and if small soil flakes stick to your finger there's no need to water just yet. The frequency of watering shouldn't change throughout the year as they generally don't go into a state of dormancy."
Avoid Overwatering and Underwatering
Peace lilies prefer consistently moist soil, making overwatering common. Plant expert Lee Miller told Martha Stewart's blog: "Check the soil moisture level with a moisture meter and water only when the top layer of soil is dry." If overwatered, adjust the watering schedule or repot in fresh soil if too far gone. Underwatering can also be harmful, causing brown, brittle leaves and dry soil. Water until excess drains, then discard standing water.
