Spring task to banish lawn weeds for good, says expert

As winter weeds become active in dormant warm-season lawns, gardeners are being urged to tackle them now for a perfect spring lawn. Peter Chaloner, managing director of Cobra, advises that the most effective method is simply digging them out with a hand trowel, ensuring the entire root is removed to prevent regrowth.

Chaloner warns against using boiling water or vinegar, as these can damage surrounding grass. He recommends a specialised weeding trowel to dig deep under the root, particularly for weeds like dandelions, broad-leaved docks and plantain, which have long taproots. For invasive species such as couch grass, the RHS notes that severe infestations may require stripping the entire lawn and re-turfing.

Once weeds are removed, prevention is key. Chaloner advises scarifying the lawn to remove debris and dead grass, then aerating to improve air circulation. Regular scarifying helps control annual and perennial weeds, while aeration allows nutrients, water and oxygen to reach the root system. Fertilising before aerating can address nutrient deficiencies that encourage weed growth.

The expert stresses repeating these tasks in autumn and sowing grass seed to fill sparse patches. Regular mowing during spring and summer, with a clippings bag to prevent seed spread, can weaken weeds like thistle and common ragwort over time. Mow little and often, taking only a small amount off at the first cut to avoid shocking the grass.
