Morrisons has become the first UK supermarket to introduce stoma-friendly toilets across all of its 497 full-sized stores, marking a major milestone in accessibility. The retail giant announced the new rule after listening to shoppers, ensuring that every branch with wheelchair-accessible toilets now includes facilities specifically designed for people living with a stoma.
Addressing Hidden Anxieties
For many individuals with a stoma, everyday activities like shopping can bring hidden anxieties. Standard accessible toilets often lack the necessary space or equipment to manage a stoma with ease. Morrisons aims to champion “independence, dignity, and comfort” for both customers and colleagues through these upgrades.
Collaboration with Experts
The supermarket worked alongside Colostomy UK and Scottish Parliament member Edward Mountain to ensure the facilities meet real-world needs. A company statement emphasized: “Not all disabilities are invisible, but they all deserve the same level of care. These upgrades are part of our wider commitment to accessible shopping.”
Facility Features
The upgraded bathrooms include wall hooks for securely hanging clothing or bags, supply shelves for medical items, discreet bins for waste disposal, and mirrors positioned to assist with quick appliance checks. These additions aim to provide a more comfortable and dignified experience.
Additional Health Initiatives
Morrisons has also partnered with the NHS to place cancer advice on bath and shower products. A range of nine own-brand items now carry messages such as “be body aware” and “know the signs of cancer,” encouraging shoppers to consult a doctor if something feels wrong.
