Former Michigan football head coach Sherrone Moore remains in jail as of Thursday morning, following his dismissal for an “inappropriate relationship with a staff member,” the university announced. The Washtenaw County Jail has not disclosed the reason for his detention, bond details, or upcoming court appearances, according to court records.
Pittsfield Township Police responded to an alleged assault near Michigan Stadium and took a person into custody, though a statement did not name anyone directly. The incident was not random and poses no ongoing threat, police said, adding that charges are pending review by prosecutors. “Given the nature of the allegations… we are prohibited from releasing additional details,” the statement read.
Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel said Moore’s conduct “constitutes a clear violation of university policy, and UM maintains zero tolerance for such behavior.” The school fired him for cause, meaning it will not owe the remaining buyout on his five-year, $5.5m annual salary deal. Moore, 39, married with three young daughters, did not respond to requests for comment.
Moore’s tenure saw a 9-3 record this season following an 8-5 debut, a step back after Michigan’s 2023 national championship. He had replaced Jim Harbaugh, who returned to the NFL. The Wolverines face Texas in the Citrus Bowl on 31 December, with Biff Poggi serving as interim coach. Moore also faced NCAA suspensions this season related to a sign-stealing scandal and had deleted a text thread with former staffer Connor Stalions that was later recovered.
Moore previously rose through the ranks as Harbaugh’s top assistant, taking over as interim coach during the 2023 championship season. His departure marks the third coaching change in four years for the programme, following a tumultuous period that included Lane Kiffin’s move to LSU.
