Use a Hair Dryer to Clean Radiators and Cut Energy Bills
Hair Dryer Hack to Clean Radiators and Reduce Energy Bills

As temperatures drop, ensuring your heating system works efficiently becomes essential. If your home isn't warming up as it should, a thorough radiator clean may be the answer. Radiators accumulate dirt and grime once switched back on. Warm air rises while cooler air sinks, and this constant circulation pulls particles from the room towards the radiator. The debris gets burnt onto the heated surface and becomes increasingly hard to remove unless you wipe down radiators at least once a month.

Why Cleaning Radiators Matters

Keeping radiators clean is vital, as trapped particles lock heat inside, stopping the radiator from warming a room effectively. This leads to a colder home and higher energy bills. Fortunately, specialists at Trads Cast Iron Radiators revealed that banishing this build-up can be surprisingly simple, requiring just one item you likely already have in your bedroom.

They explained: "Yes, you can use a hairdryer to get the dust out from the inside and down the back of the radiator. It's also useful with column radiators, such as our cast-iron models."

"This will help you as part of a larger cleaning method, as you will have a lot of the leftover dust on the top, in between the columns and behind your radiator. The hairdryer will blow the dust into the air or onto the floor, so have your vacuum cleaner ready, too."

How to Clean a Radiator with a Hair Dryer

Using a hair dryer on a radiator is among the most efficient ways to eliminate debris lodged between the fins or other hard-to-reach areas. Avoid the hot setting, as this can cause dust to rise into the air and spread throughout the room, creating more mess that may settle back on the radiator.

You will need a hair dryer, vacuum cleaner, a long brush such as a duster, a bucket of soapy water with warm water and washing-up liquid, an old towel or sheet, and a sponge and cloth.

First, turn off your heating. A hot radiator will draw dust towards it and can be dangerous to touch. Wipe the radiator surface with a damp sponge and vacuum underneath to clear outer dust. Position a towel beneath the radiator. Use a duster to clean as much of the rear as possible, reaching into the grooves and between the columns.

Final Steps and Benefits

Set the hair dryer on a cool or low heat setting and blow leftover dust off the rear, directing the nozzle at the top air vents to blow dust downwards onto the towel. Wipe down the radiator with washing-up liquid in a bucket of water, and clean nearby walls as dust can cling to them. Dry the radiator with a cloth and ensure it is completely dry before turning it back on to prevent rust.

Your radiator should now be spotlessly clean, meaning your home will heat up considerably faster and energy costs can be reduced.
