Green Party’s Zack Polanski Proposes Ban on Cheap Vegetables
Green Party’s Polanski Wants to Ban Cheap Vegetables

Green Party leader Zack Polanski has sparked controversy by calling for new laws that would effectively ban cheap vegetables from supermarket shelves. Speaking at a meeting of the Bakers, Food and Allied Workers' Union, Polanski argued that vegetables sold for as little as 7 pence are evidence of worker exploitation in the supply chain.

Polanski's Accusations

Polanski accused supermarket bosses of reaping record profits while paying poverty wages. He claimed that such low prices are "not a sign of a healthy system" and that "something is not right" when customers pay so little for produce. The Green Party leader insisted that cheap vegetables indicate exploitation somewhere in the supply chain.

Proposed Regulations

Polanski's party has called for increased regulations on the retail sector, forcing bosses to pay suppliers more. This follows other Green Party proposals, including a £15 per hour minimum wage and a 10-to-1 pay ratio to limit executive earnings.

Reactions

Conservative shadow business secretary Andrew Griffith dismissed the proposals as "delusional," stating that food retailing and production are already heavily regulated. He warned that the plans would "add significantly to the cost of food." Retailers also rejected the claims of exploitation. Andrew Opie of the British Retail Consortium noted that discounts on fruit and vegetables help customers maintain a healthy diet amid the cost-of-living crisis.

Former Marks & Spencer chief executive Stuart Machin previously called a similar proposal by Chancellor Rachel Reeves to cap prices on staple foods "completely preposterous."

The Green Party has seen a surge in support since Polanski became leader last year, with a series of policy announcements attracting attention.
