A simple and cost-effective cleaning hack using bicarbonate of soda has been shared on social media to tackle stubborn yellow stains on toilet seats. The method, costing just 65p, has gained popularity on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook group, which has over 500,000 followers.
The tip emerged after a group member asked for advice on removing yellow stains from underneath a toilet seat. The post received over 400 responses, with many recommending a paste made from bicarbonate of soda and either white vinegar, water, or lemon juice.
One Facebook user commented: 'White vinegar and some bicarbonate of soda mix to a paste leave on for 20 mins mine came up spotless.' Another added: 'Bicarb and water, mix as paste leave on 10mins then scrub and should come off.'
Some users suggested using half a lemon dipped in bicarbonate of soda. One person wrote: 'Cut a lemon in half. Dip into bicarbonate of soda. Rub into underneath of toilet seat. You will need to rub it for about 10 minutes. Wipe off with damp cloth. Do this once a week. No more yellow seat.'
Bicarbonate of soda is available at Tesco and Aldi for 65p for a 200g pack. Experts advise wearing gloves when using the mixture to protect the skin.
