A 742-year-old independent school in North Wales, a regional airline, an insurance underwriter, and three other UK businesses have been forced into administration in recent weeks, according to a roundup of filings. The collapses reflect ongoing economic pressures including rising energy bills, increased debt, and reduced consumer spending.
Ruthin School: 742-Year-Old Institution Closes
Ruthin School, founded in 1284 and located in Ruthin, North Wales, announced its shock closure and will enter financial administration. Acquired by Chinese-owned Galaxy Global Education Group in 2023, the boarding school will not reopen after the summer break. More than 100 staff are expected to lose their jobs, and parents of approximately 240 pupils must find alternative schools.
The school had recently been named the top independent school in North Wales in The Sunday Times Parent Power Guide 2026 and was ranked among the UK's leading boarding schools by the Independent Schools Council.
Eastern Airlines: 25-Year-Old Carrier Unable to Be Saved
Eastern Airlines, based in North Lincolnshire and operating for 25 years, entered administration last year. A rescue deal fell through, and the regional airline could not be saved. At its peak, it operated 200 flights daily across the UK, Ireland, and Europe, employing around 330 staff. The majority have been made redundant, with only 16 employees remaining to oversee the administration process.
G2 Housing Group Ltd: Construction Firm Folds After 12 Years
G2 Housing Group Ltd, a private limited company based in Hampshire, entered administration after 12 years in business. The firm specialised in sustainable building and was a registered member of the UN-backed One Planet Network, with a designated Director of Sustainability and Wellbeing. It had operated in building development and management consulting since 2014.
RPA1 Ltd: Social Housing Provider Faces Insolvency
RPA1 Ltd, a social housing company, entered administration after failing to meet its liabilities. The business acquires newly built affordable homes from developers and leases them to registered social housing providers. Joint administrators have been appointed, and they aim to maintain normal operations for tenants during the process.
W.I.S.E. Underwriting Agency Ltd: Insurance Firm Ceases Trading
W.I.S.E. Underwriting Agency Ltd, a City of London-based insurance company founded in 1997, has entered administration. The firm specialised in marine cargo insurance, covering risks, loss or damage, and specie insurance for high-value assets. A statement on its website confirms it has "ceased all trading and regulated activity."
Senior Glass Systems: Scarborough Manufacturer Collapses
Senior Glass Systems, a sealed glass manufacturer in Scarborough, has also entered administration. According to administrators, the company faced cashflow challenges due to downward price pressure and increased costs. All 27 employees have been made redundant, and administrators are assisting them in claiming entitlements.
The wave of administrations highlights the ongoing challenges facing UK businesses in 2026, with thousands of firms collapsing due to rising operational costs and reduced demand.
