Earlier this year, a Michigan man heard the cries of a tiny animal while walking along a marina in Detroit's Jefferson Chalmers neighbourhood. The winter was bitterly cold, with the water frozen over and everything covered in frost. He discovered a small kitten trapped between a wooden dock and a metal plank, its paws frozen to the metal.
Knowing it was dangerous to step onto the ice, the man grabbed a nearby raft and placed it on the frozen water. He carefully approached the trembling kitten, gently removed its paws from the frost, and nestled it inside his coat for warmth. He intended to take the kitten to a local vet, but the surgery had closed for the day. A receptionist advised him to keep the animal warm, so he turned up the car's heating and let it thaw before taking it home.
He named the kitten Chilly, a fitting name given the circumstances. Chilly is a slim cat with kind green eyes, described as sweet but shy, especially when picked up. She has bonded most closely with the man's daughter, who plays with her throughout the day.
The family, who own two golden retrievers and had never had a cat before, initially planned to foster Chilly temporarily before sending her to an animal shelter. However, despite the man's allergy to cats, he decided to keep her, saying a runny nose is a small price to pay for the joy she brings.
During the first month, Chilly was nursed back to health. She had a large wound on the back of her left paw from being stuck on the ice, which was bandaged and healed after weekly vet visits. The man reflects that rescuing Chilly showed him how much pets rely on their owners and the responsibility involved in keeping them alive. He looks forward to seeing the wonderful cat she will grow into.
