Mould on shower silicone sealant can be eliminated using a common kitchen ingredient: white vinegar. The acidic properties of vinegar penetrate porous silicone, killing spores at the root, unlike bleach which only treats the surface.
Why White Vinegar Works
White vinegar contains acetic acid, a natural mould killer that is safe for silicone sealant. It does not cause discoloration or damage, yet it effectively reaches deep into the material to eradicate mould spores. Handyman Terry Alexander of The Plumbero recommends this method for its simplicity and effectiveness.
Step-by-Step Cleaning Process
- Apply vinegar: Spray or pour a liberal amount of white vinegar onto the mouldy silicone sealant, ensuring full coverage.
- Let it sit: Allow the vinegar to remain for at least one hour. For best results, leave it overnight to thoroughly kill spores.
- Scrub: Use a bristled brush or an old toothbrush to scrub away the loosened mould. It should lift off easily.
- Rinse and dry: Wash the area with warm water and dry with a clean cloth to prevent future mould growth.
Note: White vinegar has a strong odour, so open a window during use. For a more powerful solution, combine vinegar with baking soda and tea tree oil for extended cleanliness.
