Humpback Whale 'Timmy' Freed in North Sea After Weeks Stranded

A rescue team on Saturday released a humpback whale from a barge into the North Sea, ending weeks of stranding in shallow waters near Germany since March, according to witnesses.

Timmy's Ordeal

Nicknamed Timmy by German media, the whale was first spotted near Germany's Baltic Sea coast on March 3, far from its natural Atlantic Ocean habitat. The mammal's health deteriorated as it repeatedly became stranded in shallow waters. Unsuccessful efforts to coax it toward deeper seas were live-streamed globally.

Rescue Decision

The environment minister for Germany's Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state approved the rescue attempt proposed by a private initiative, despite warnings from some scientists that the intervention might be too stressful for the animal.

The operation involved carefully transporting Timmy on a barge to deeper waters, where it was released. The whale's condition appeared stable at the time of release, though long-term survival remains uncertain.
