Nobody wants their towels to smell mouldy, but keeping them fresh can be a challenge, especially when packed tightly into a cupboard. Even frequent washing often fails to prevent that unpleasant musty odour from creeping back.
One person turned to the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook page for advice on tackling damp-smelling towels, asking: "How do I stop my stored bedding and towels from smelling musty? Thanks in advance."
The 6p solution
According to fellow group members, the most popular solution is surprisingly simple: place tumble dryer sheets between stored towels and bedding. One person said: "Put some tumble dry sheets between them when you store them." Another commented: "Make sure they are 100% dry before you put away. Tumble dryer sheets & a dehumidifier in with them."
A third added: "I put tumble drier sheets in my stored bedding. I placed them in as I folded them. They smell lovely when taken out of storage. I do it with holiday clothes as well." While another said: "Put a tumbler sheet in them when you fold them to put away."
Why it works
Tumble dryer sheets are infused with pleasant, fresh scents that transfer onto laundry during drying. Tucking a few into your airing cupboard can help eliminate musty odours and keep towels smelling fresh for longer. A pack of 40 costs just £2.65 from Tesco, making each sheet around 6p.
Additional tips
Group members also suggested storing towels with bars of soap, keeping them in vacuum bags, and rotating them regularly to ensure all are used.
