How to keep wasps away from your home with citrus peels

Pest control experts have shared a simple, chemical-free way to keep wasps from entering homes this summer. According to Premier Pest Control, placing citrus peels on windowsills and near doors can deter the insects.

Why wasps are attracted to homes

Wasps are drawn to sugary substances, food scraps and sweet fragrances. The experts said: "Wasps will hover around your home if they can smell sugary substances, food scraps and sweet fragrances, which is why you’ll often find them making their way to your outdoor gatherings." They added that while wasps can be annoying, they are valuable for ecosystems, human health and the economy, so people should avoid killing them.

Natural deterrents

Strong citrus scents from lemon, orange or lime can repel wasps. Other natural repellents include clove oil, vinegar, and herbs such as mint, basil, thyme and eucalyptus. Planting these herbs in the garden or keeping small pots near outdoor spaces may also help.

Additional tips

To prevent wasps from gathering, always cover or put away food, especially sweet and aromatic items like sugary drinks, fruits, alcohol and desserts. Keep bins sealed and free of leftover food debris. In warm weather, double bagging food items can reduce smells that attract wasps.
