Adding half a cup of baking soda directly to the washing machine drum can make bed sheets softer and fluffier, according to cleaning expert and TikTok creator Chantel Mila. The natural kitchen cupboard staple is presented as a simple solution for scratchy bedding.
Over time, sweat, body oils and accumulated dust can leave bed sheet fabric feeling rough and uncomfortable. Baking soda works to soften linen by balancing the water's pH levels and breaking down stiff residues embedded in the fibres.
How baking soda works on fabrics
As an alkaline mineral, baking soda strips away hard-water minerals such as calcium and magnesium that cling to linen fibres and cause a scratchy sensation. It also dissolves built-up soap, detergent and fabric softener residue, allowing it to rinse away thoroughly.
The ingredient also helps balance pH levels in the washing machine, which is particularly beneficial for those living in hard water areas. Baking soda functions as a natural deodoriser, tackling unpleasant odours left behind by sweat, body oils and dust.
Expert endorsement and extra uses
Experts at Whirlpool said: "A half cup of baking soda can make it easier for these products to work harder at removing dirt and stains. You may even find that you can use less detergent and replace bleach with baking soda."
Rhiannon Masters, interior designer and head of brand at Piglet in Bed, told Ideal Home: "If your bedding feels a bit stiff, baking soda can work amazingly." She added: "Adding half a cup to your washing machine along with your detergent is an easy hack to break down minerals in hard water. It's also a natural and budget-friendly way to keep your sheets soft and fresh."
Beyond bed linen, baking soda can also help to soften towels and clothing.
