A miracle tortoise has emerged as the sole survivor of a devastating fire that swept through a play centre and mini-zoo in Buntingford, Hertfordshire. The blaze at The Jungle Box claimed the lives of all other animals, but firefighters discovered the baby tortoise alive during their investigation.
Heartwarming Discovery Amid Tragedy
Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service shared the uplifting news on Facebook, posting a photo of the tiny survivor. They wrote: 'We have some heartwarming news to share following yesterday’s devastating fire at the Jungle Box in Buntingford. While carrying out the fire investigation, we incredibly discovered a baby tortoise alive in the aftermath, despite earlier fears that all the animals had died. A small but powerful moment after a very difficult incident.'
Fire Details and Response
The fire was reported at around 3am on Wednesday, prompting ten fire engines to respond to the Watermill Industrial Estate. Black smoke billowed from the building, and residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed. Road closures were implemented on Aspenden Road and London Road. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The Jungle Box, which opened in June last year, featured a mini-zoo and pets corner housing meerkats, owls, iguanas, giant tortoises, and a 16ft snake. All other animals perished in the blaze.
