A rapidly spreading wildfire has scorched through 2,000 hectares of land near Arcachon Bay in France's Gironde region, sparking the evacuation of more than 10,000 people including tourists at nearby campsites.
The ferocious "fire tornado" tore through the commune of Saumos in the Gironde department of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. The blaze is raging close to the Arcachon Bay area, a well-loved tourist spot, leading officials to order mass evacuations from the vicinity.
Firefighters Battle Blaze Near Lège-Cap-Ferret
Regional authorities confirmed that a wildfire in woodland near Lège-Cap-Ferret, to the southwest of Bordeaux, has consumed more than 31 square kilometres (12 square miles). Despite the magnitude of the conflagration, no casualties have been recorded thus far.
Sophie Brocas, the prefect of the Gironde region, stated that approximately 700 firefighters have been deployed to tackle the blaze, with additional support arriving from the Paris region. The fire front crept to within 300 metres (980 feet) of the nearest homes in Lège, reports the Express.
Context of Summer Wildfires
This incident follows less than a fortnight after a catastrophic fire swept through Almería province in southern Spain, underscoring the escalating danger presented by severe summer wildfires throughout the region. The initial blaze hit a modest expat enclave and, despite its comparatively small scale, ripped through the area with remarkable ferocity owing to scorching, arid, and blustery weather.
The inferno resulted in 13 fatalities, among them seven British citizens, ranking it amongst Spain's most catastrophic forest fires in recent memory.
Heatwaves Fuel Fires Across France
Following a succession of heatwaves that commenced prior to summer's official arrival, France has been grappling with extensive wildfires driven by unprecedented temperatures and sustained drought-like conditions. The searing heat has left flora and plant life critically parched, rendering woodlands and grassy areas exceptionally susceptible to catching fire and enabling blazes to advance with alarming speed.
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez reports that over 12,500 wildfires have broken out nationwide since the year began, with close to 44,000 hectares of terrain already ravaged.
