A massive wildfire tore through 10 acres of grassland at Ingebourne Hill in Rainham, east London, on Saturday evening. Around 70 firefighters battled the blaze, which broke out at about 5pm. No injuries were reported, but 35 residents on a nearby street were evacuated as a precaution.
Firefighters battle in hot conditions
Station Commander Kevin Morgan, who was at the scene, said: "Firefighters worked hard in hot, arduous conditions to bring the fire under control and prevent it from spreading to any properties." He added that the fire produced significant smoke, urging residents to keep windows and doors closed and avoid the area around Palmerston Road.
Firefighters received more than 20 calls from 5.02pm and sent crews from Barking, Romford, East Ham, Dagenham and surrounding fire stations. The fire was under control by 8.56pm. The cause is under investigation.
Special equipment deployed
One of the Brigade's Terrain Support Vehicles, carrying approximately 475 litres of water and other equipment, was deployed. Crews also used backpack blowers and wildfire beaters to fight the flames.
Public urged to prevent wildfires
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: "During periods of dry and sustained extreme heat, the chance of wildfires spreading rapidly is high. The Brigade is ready and prepared to respond to all types of incidents, but we urge everyone to play their part to prevent incidents." They warned against using disposable BBQs in parks and urged proper disposal of smoking materials and rubbish.
