Adrian Chiles, a broadcaster and Guardian columnist, writes that while he is used to hot days, the warm wind has really panicked him. He first noticed it a couple of weeks ago on the streets of Cardiff, where a strong gust of warm wind felt alarmingly wrong.
Chiles says he has been aware of the climate crisis, but it took the warmth of the wind to panic him. He can manage punishing heat, but thought there was a tacit agreement with the British climate that a breeze would cool him down. When a breeze warms him up in the UK, it feels un-British and makes him wonder if we are getting into the end of days.
He describes turning a corner on St Mary's Street in Cardiff and feeling a strong gust of warm wind in his face and lungs. He looked for an idling bus that might have generated the blast, but there was no bus in sight. It was the weather, and it felt alarmingly wrong.
Chiles has spent much time in south Wales and is used to rain, wind, tempests, and fog, but never a warm wind. The last time he felt such wind was off the Gulf of Mexico into Galveston, Texas, where it was tolerable. But blowing hotly into Cardiff off the Bristol Channel feels all wrong. He concludes: 'We're doomed.'
