The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued a travel warning for France as wildfires force the evacuation of some tourist accommodation in the Gironde region.
Wildfires in Gironde
In an alert released on Thursday, the FCDO stated: "Wildfires are affecting parts of Gironde (in southwestern France), including areas around Le Porge and Lège-Cap-Ferret. French authorities have evacuated some campsites and tourist accommodation. Access to affected areas may be restricted. Roads may be closed at short notice."
The FCDO advises those in or planning to travel to the area to follow local authority advice, monitor local media, and contact their accommodation or travel provider for the latest guidance. In an emergency, holidaymakers should call 18 (fire service) or 112 (emergency services).
Increased Wildfire Risk
The risk of wildfires is considerably elevated during the summer months from April to October, particularly in southern France, along the Mediterranean coastline, in Corsica, and across parts of the south-west during hot, dry weather. Starting a wildfire is a criminal offence in France, even if accidental, and can result in a hefty fine or custodial sentence.
