UK to Ban Social Media for Under-16s: How It Will Work and What Apps Are Affected
UK Social Media Ban for Under-16s: Key Details Explained

The UK Government is set to launch a social media ban for all those under the age of 16, aiming to give children their "childhoods back." The ban, expected by spring 2027, will prevent under-16s from creating new accounts and deactivate existing profiles on platforms that enable social interaction and use algorithms to curate content.

What Apps Are Affected?

The ban includes platforms such as Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and X. However, messaging services like WhatsApp and Signal are not currently intended to be included. The government has yet to confirm the full list of apps covered.

Additional Restrictions

Beyond the ban, the government will block harmful functions like livestreaming and stranger communications for under-16s, extending to gaming sites. These restrictions will default for under-16s and 17-year-olds to prevent a sudden exposure to social media. Further measures, including overnight curfews and breaks from infinite scrolling for under-18s, are under consideration and will be detailed in July. AI "romantic companion" chatbots designed to simulate sexual relationships will have a minimum age of 18.

Enforcement

Learning from Australia's ban, the UK plans to introduce highly effective age assurance measures to ensure compliance. Ofcom will conduct a rapid study on effective age verification and an urgent review of its enforcement capabilities.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated: "Parents want to keep their kids safe and happy, but the online world has made that harder than ever. We're going further than any country by banning social media for under-16s and giving kids their childhood back." He added: "Tech giants had their chance and failed, but we're stepping in to protect children and set a new normal."
