UK Grid Issues Rare Summer Power Warning Amid Heat

The National Energy System Operator (Neso) has issued a rare summer electricity margin notice, warning that the power supply could be squeezed on Wednesday evening as extreme heat places significant pressure on the system. The notice, typically reserved for winter months when heating demand peaks, signals to the electricity market that additional capacity may be required to prevent shortages.

Unprecedented Summer Intervention

The margin notice, a tool used to alert the industry to tight supply conditions, covers the period between 7pm and 10pm on Wednesday. A Neso spokesperson explained: “Our forecasts are showing tight margins on the electricity system for tomorrow evening. This is due to the impact of extremely high temperatures affecting Great Britain and the continent and low wind.” The spokesperson stressed that the notice is a “routine tool” and “does not mean electricity supply is at risk.”

This summer intervention is particularly noteworthy as such notices are far more common in winter, when increased heating demand strains the grid. The current heatwave, with temperatures potentially reaching 40°C in parts of England and Wales, has created a unique set of challenges for the energy system.

Impact of Heat on Power Infrastructure

Extreme heat can reduce the efficiency of various power generation methods, including nuclear plants, gas stations, and water cooling systems. Additionally, higher temperatures drive up electricity consumption as households and businesses rely more on fans and air conditioning to stay cool. The combination of reduced efficiency and increased demand has led to the tight margins forecasted by Neso.

The heatwave, caused by a “heat-dome” settling over western Europe, has brought extreme conditions across the continent. The UK’s grid operator is closely monitoring the situation and has called for additional capacity to ensure stability during the peak evening hours.

Broader Context and Precautionary Measures

While the notice has raised concerns, Neso has assured the public that it is a standard precautionary measure. The system is designed to activate market mechanisms to procure extra power if needed, thereby preventing any actual supply disruptions. The grid operator continues to work with energy providers to maintain balance and ensure that homes and businesses remain powered throughout the heatwave.
