Urgent Summer Heatwave Warning for Dog Owners Over Toxic Algae
Summer Heatwave Warning: Dog Owners Alert for Toxic Algae

As temperatures soar across the UK, vets are urging dog owners to stay vigilant about blue-green algae in lakes and ponds. Dr Rhian Littlehales, clinical governance director at Medivet & Partners, warns that the algae produce harmful toxins that can be fatal to dogs if ingested.

What is Blue-Green Algae?

Blue-green algae is a type of bacteria that clumps together in bodies of standing freshwater like lakes. It produces toxins that can affect a dog's liver or cause neurological signs. Exposure is often fatal and can lead to long-term health problems even if the dog survives.

Symptoms of Algae Poisoning

  • Vomiting or being sick
  • Diarrhoea
  • Seizures or fitting
  • Weakness, collapse, or unconsciousness
  • Disorientation or confusion
  • Excessive drooling
  • Breathing difficulties

If your dog shows any of these signs, take them to a vet immediately.

Prevention Tips

Dr Rhian advises keeping dogs away from any lakes or ponds suspected of contamination. Provide an alternative water source, such as a travel water bowl, to prevent dogs from drinking contaminated water. At the beach, monitor dogs to ensure they don't drink too much seawater, as high salt content can cause illness.

Water Safety for Dogs

If your dog is new to swimming, start in shallow water and supervise closely. At the beach, watch the tide to prevent the dog from being pulled away. If a dog gets into trouble, contact a lifeguard immediately. Dr Rhian warns against jumping in to save a dog due to risks like cold water shock and the dog potentially pulling you underwater. Once safely on shore, take the dog to a vet for a check-up.
