One issue that can be especially troublesome during summer is the bin area, as they can begin to release odours and attract flies if not properly looked after. Lynsey suggests one inexpensive kitchen essential that can make a significant impact: bicarbonate of soda.
Why Bicarbonate of Soda Works
Bicarbonate of soda acts as a natural deodoriser with alkaline properties, neutralising acidic smells that linger in the air. Simply sprinkle a few tablespoons at the bottom of the bin before inserting the bag. According to Good Housekeeping, this method can be effective for up to three months, though it's advisable to do it weekly due to possible leaks.
Additional Natural Solutions
Lynsey also recommends using essential oils to maintain freshness without strong chemicals. A few drops of lemon, eucalyptus, or tea tree oil on a cotton pad placed between the liner and bin creates a pleasant aroma and is naturally antibacterial and insect-repelling. She also suggests soaking cotton pads with citronella and positioning them near the bin area, or using citronella incense or fly-repelling pouches.
