Spanish authorities have issued new warnings as wildfires continue to force thousands of people to evacuate their homes. The Directorate-General for Traffic posted on X, formerly Twitter, asking people to avoid traveling on roads in the western Sierra de Madrid and in the fire zones of Ávila, Toledo, and Castellón. It also stated that 47 roads remain closed.
Heatwave Fuels Fire Risk
Spain's national meteorological service AEMET said the heatwave is expected to persist, with intense heat and dryness pushing fire danger levels to very high or extreme. These conditions are forecast to continue over the next few days, with fire risk predicted for the coming week.
Road closures affect the provinces of Ávila, Castellón, Madrid, and Toledo.
UK Travel Advice
The UK government is not issuing specific warnings against travelling to Spain but recommends vigilance. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) urges British nationals in wildfire-affected areas to follow instructions from local authorities and emergency services, check updates, and call 112 for emergency help.
The Met Office predicts highs of 39C in Madrid this week and 41C in Toledo. Wildfires are also burning in parts of France, with around 300,000 people forced to leave their homes across the two European nations.
