A fire believed to have started in solar panels has devastated a home in Glasgow's Dalmarnock area, leaving a mother and her teenage son with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Jennifer and her 13-year-old son Noah were left homeless after the blaze ripped through their property at London Avenue in the former Athletes' Village on Wednesday, June 17.
Fire Response and Damage
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service received the alarm at 3.31pm and deployed six appliances and a high-reach vehicle to the scene. Firefighters battled the blaze affecting the roof of the three-storey building. A spokesperson confirmed there were no casualties, and crews left after ensuring the area was safe. Despite their efforts, the house was gutted, and the property has since been condemned.
Family's Loss and Fundraiser
Jennifer was at work when she received the call informing her that her home was on fire. Leanne Lamont, Jennifer's cousin, told Glasgow Live: 'The only belongings they have are the clothes they were wearing to work and school that day. Their house has been condemned, and they are both absolutely heartbroken.' Leanne set up a GoFundMe page to help the family with immediate essentials such as clothing, toiletries, and other basic necessities, as they face significant financial hardship and the challenge of rebuilding their lives. Repairs to their home could take up to a year.
Background of the Athletes' Village
The Athletes' Village was built for the 2014 Commonwealth Games and was praised for its energy efficiency measures, including solar panels, ventilation, heat recovery systems, and a district heating scheme that is roughly 40 per cent more efficient than normal heating schemes. The builders received numerous awards for the project's sustainability and design. Leanne believes the fire started after the solar panels caught fire.
The family is currently staying with relatives while housing authorities arrange alternative accommodation. Leanne expressed gratitude that no one was injured and thanked everyone who has donated or shared the fundraiser.
