Saharan Heatwave to Bring Soaring Temperatures Across Europe This Week
Saharan Heatwave to Soar Across Europe This Week

A significant heatwave is expected to sweep across Europe this week as a mass of hot air from the Sahara Desert moves over the continent. The Iberian Peninsula and parts of southern and western France are already experiencing temperatures in the low- to mid-30s Celsius, with the hot air forecast to spread northeastward by midweek.

Forecast for Europe

By Friday, maximum temperatures are predicted to reach the mid-30s Celsius in several countries, including Germany, Italy, and Czechia. These readings are 9 to 13 degrees Celsius above the 1991-2020 climate average, depending on the location. The UK may also feel the effects, with occasional plumes of warm air from the continent potentially pushing temperatures into the mid- to high-20s Celsius across southern and eastern England on Thursday and Friday.

The heatwave conditions, defined as five consecutive days in the mid-30s in some areas, are expected to ease for most by early next week.

Australia's Mild Winter Start

Meanwhile, parts of Australia are experiencing a mild start to winter, with above-average temperatures. A slow-moving low-pressure system south of South Australia is drawing warm northerly air across the eastern half of the country, accompanied by gusty conditions.

In Melbourne, daytime temperatures are forecast to reach the high teens Celsius on Tuesday and Wednesday, about 3 to 4 degrees above average. Overnight temperatures are also expected to be above normal, nearing the mid-teens, which is typically 5 to 6 degrees Celsius above average.

While not considered extreme, these conditions are likely to be a recurring feature of the Australian winter. The Bureau of Meteorology links this pattern to developing El Niño conditions in the Pacific Ocean, which generally bring warmer than average daytime temperatures to much of the country.

As the heatwave affects Europe and Australia enjoys a mild winter, residents are advised to stay informed about local weather updates and take necessary precautions against the heat.
