North East Coast Heatwave Draws Crowds to Water Activities

People across the North East are flocking to the coast as temperatures soar into the high 20s and low 30s Celsius this week, with an amber heat warning in effect. On Tuesday, the region saw highs of 30°C, and the rest of the week is expected to remain in the mid to high 20s. While southern parts of the UK face red alerts, the North East's amber warning indicates significant impacts expected across health and social care services due to the high temperatures.

Crowds Take to the Water at North Tyneside Beaches

On Tuesday, many residents and visitors headed to North Tyneside beaches, including Cullercoats Bay and King Edward's Bay in Tynemouth, to cool down. Pictures show people engaging in water activities such as paddleboarding, swimming, and jet skiing. The scenes depict groups enjoying the sea, with paddleboarders and swimmers making the most of the warm weather.

RNLI Issues Cold Water Safety Warning

Despite the hot air temperatures, sea-surface temperatures remain cold, prompting a safety warning from the RNLI. Samantha Hughes, National Water Safety Partner at the RNLI, said: “With warmer weather approaching, it’s important to remember that the water is still cold. Entering it unexpectedly can lead to cold water shock, causing a sudden increase in breathing and heart rate, which may trigger panic.”

She advised anyone struggling in the water to “Float to Live: tilt your head back so your ears are submerged, relax and control your breathing. You may need to gently use your hands to help you stay afloat, and it’s ok if your legs sink — everyone floats differently.” Hughes also urged beachgoers to choose lifeguarded beaches and swim between red and yellow flags, and in a coastal emergency to call 999 for the coastguard.

Heatwave Precautions and Outlook

Weather experts have urged people to stay cool and take precautions during the heatwave. The amber warning for the North East highlights potential impacts on health and social care services. Visitors to the coast are reminded that while air temperatures are high, the water remains cold, posing risks of cold water shock.
