Large parts of the UK are under hosepipe bans this summer due to hot, dry weather. Several water companies, including Thames Water, Affinity Water, Anglian Water, Cambridge Water, Southern Water, South East Water, South West Water and Welsh Water, have imposed restrictions. Millions of people have been asked to reduce water use to protect resources.
How to Report a Neighbour Violating the Ban
If you suspect someone is using a hosepipe, sprinkler or pressure washer in breach of the ban, you can let the water company know. Southern Water offers a confidential online form for reporting concerns such as watering a garden, filling a paddling pool or swimming pool, or washing a car or windows.
Southern Water stated: "We always aim to educate first, but in serious or repeated cases, we may need to take action if restrictions are being ignored. By working together, we can make sure there’s enough water for everyone – now and in the future."
What the Restrictions Cover
The bans prohibit using hosepipes, sprinklers and pressure washers, as well as filling paddling pools, hot tubs or swimming pools. However, households can still use watering cans, buckets and water butts.
Thames Water advised: "Please do not call 999 if you see someone using a hosepipe." Welsh Water noted that breaches could lead to enforcement action where appropriate, but added: "Please remember that some customers and businesses are legally exempt from the restrictions, so someone using a hosepipe may be doing so lawfully. We encourage everyone to focus on reducing their own water use rather than assuming someone is breaching the restrictions."
Who Is Exempt from the Hosepipe Ban?
Exemptions vary by company but generally include: wastewater-only customers (check with supplier); uses for health or safety of people or animals; people with severe mobility difficulties; those on Priority Services Register (check exemption); commercial plant growing and National Plant Collections; businesses offering cleaning services; and filling caravan or motorhome water tanks for essential use.
