Mourne Mountains Wildfire Fight to Continue All Week

Firefighting operations in the Mourne Mountains are set to continue throughout the week, as crews battle persistent wildfires in the region.

Massive Response on Monday

Almost 100 firefighters were deployed on Monday to tackle the blazes, which began over the weekend across several areas of the mountain range. The hot and dry weather conditions have fueled the fires, prompting a sustained response from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS).

Ongoing Efforts

A NIFRS spokesperson confirmed that approximately 95 firefighters were involved in operations near Ballagh Road in Newcastle and Sandbank Road in Hilltown. “Firefighting operations are expected to continue across the week, and we reiterate our appeal for the public to avoid these areas,” they said.

Additional Incidents

Over the weekend, firefighters also responded to several smaller wildfires in Belfast, Armagh, Lurgan, and Rathfriland. The NIFRS has reminded the public to remain vigilant, as a weather warning for wildfires remains in place. “If you see a fire, call 999 immediately,” the spokesperson urged.
