Moorland wildfire near Manchester closes Woodhead Pass

A large wildfire broke out on Tintwistle Moor near Glossop and Tameside on Wednesday evening, June 24, 2026, at around 10pm, and continued to burn through Thursday, June 25. The blaze prompted the closure of the A628 Woodhead Pass and an avoid the area warning for residents.

Firefighters battle challenging conditions

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, supported by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, reported that the fire was affecting approximately 400 metres-squared of moorland and woodland. Crews worked with a water carrier, welfare unit, and command support unit. The Peak District Fire Operations Group also assisted.

Jon Pearce, MP for High Peak, said in a Facebook post: "I’m saddened to see the wildfire on Tintwistle Moor. High Peak is the most vulnerable constituency to wildfires in the UK, and it’s vital that we all do our part to protect our moorlands, countryside and communities, especially during periods of hot, dry weather like we’re experiencing now."

Road closure and travel disruption

National Highways confirmed the A628 Woodhead Pass was closed in both directions near Hollingworth. Motorists were advised to use the M62 and expect delays. The closure was between the Gun Inn, Mottram Moor A57 and the roundabout at Flouch, junction with the A616.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service stated: "The A628 Woodhead Pass is currently closed between the Gun Inn, Mottram Moor A57 to the roundabout at Flouch, junction with the A616. We would like to say a huge thank you to our colleagues and partners, including those from the Peak District Fire Operations Group (FOG) who are working alongside us at the incident, for their continued efforts."

Residents urged to take precautions

Due to the large smoke plume, residents living near the fire were advised to keep windows and doors closed. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "We are currently assisting Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service at a fire on the moorland in Glossop, close to neighbouring Tameside. Due to the large smoke plume, nearby residents are advised to keep doors and windows closed."

Dramatic footage showed plumes of smoke billowing overhead and large flames visible from the Woodhead Pass. The fire service thanked communities for their cooperation and patience, urging people to avoid the area and find alternative routes.
