The Guardian columnist George Monbiot has raised concerns about the fragility of the global food system, warning that it could face a catastrophic collapse similar to the 2008 financial crisis.
Speaking on the Guardian's podcast, Monbiot explained that many countries rely heavily on global trade for food security. While this interdependence can mitigate local harvest failures, it has also eroded the system's resilience, making it vulnerable to unexpected shocks.
Monbiot highlighted that maintaining high food production levels requires significant inputs such as fertiliser and extensive global trade networks. However, these networks have lost crucial elements of resilience, leaving the system exposed to potential tipping points.
He drew a parallel with the financial system before 2008, noting that once resilience is lost, it is impossible to predict what event might trigger a collapse. Monbiot suggested that a conflict such as war with Iran could be the catalyst for a food system crisis.
