Met Office Issues 24-Hour Extreme Heat Warning for Greater Manchester

The Met Office has issued a new 24-hour amber weather warning for Greater Manchester, warning of "exceptionally warm temperatures" both day and night. The alert comes into force at midnight on Friday, June 26, and will remain in place until 11:59 pm the same day. It covers large parts of the country including Greater Manchester, the Midlands, Yorkshire, and South East England.

Details of the Amber Warning

The Met Office's amber alert states: "Hot and humid weather is expected to continue, with exceptionally warm temperatures both day and night." It adds: "Very hot weather will continue to affect much of England. Temperatures by day are widely expected to exceed 30 Celsius, with the hottest areas potentially peaking around 38 Celsius in eastern and central England." Overnight, temperatures are unlikely to fall much lower than the high teens Celsius, and some places will not fall below the low 20s Celsius. These high temperatures will also be accompanied by high humidity.

Cooler conditions will slowly begin to become established from the west following this period, although very warm conditions are likely to remain across east and southeastern England through Saturday, albeit not as hot as earlier in the week.

Previous Warnings This Week

This alert is the latest in a series of warnings issued by the Met Office this week. Forecasters have also imposed a rare red "danger to life" warning across parts of the country, as temperatures are expected to reach as high as 40°C for some. The Met Office's red alert is currently in place across parts of South East and South West England, the East and West Midlands, London, and Wales, and will remain in force until 11:59 pm on Thursday, June 25. The weather agency has warned that "an exceptional spell of hot and humid weather is expected across this region, with impacts to the general population" highly likely.

An additional amber warning for "hot and humid weather" has been issued across the east and south east of England, as well as London. This comes into force at midnight on Saturday, June 27, and will remain in place until 9 pm the same day.
