Members and supporters of a North East football team are set to take on an epic cycling challenge, raising awareness for a cause close to their hearts. Players and friends of Marden FC Over 40's will take on 'Ride the 41' this Saturday, June 13.
The Challenge
Setting off from their home ground at Blue Flames in Benton they will tackle a 41-mile bike ride lapping around The Rising Sun together as players, friends and supporters united by one cause to raise vital funds for prostate cancer awareness and support.
As prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men over 40, the team hopes the ride will represent every man, teammate, dad, brother, son and friends affected by the disease.
Team's Motivation
Chris Rue, Assistant manager of the Marden Over 40's football team said: "We are a proud family of like minded 'old men' who try to go the extra mile - this June we are putting our efforts towards raising money for support towards prostate cancer, a cancer which unfortunately is affecting too many lads we know."
"The day should be a fab day of raising awareness. We have around 50-70 cyclists on the day and are close to raising £5k." Chris added: "This isn't just about football - it's about standing shoulder to shoulder for the men in our lives. Prostate cancer affects 1 in 8 men in the UK. Many of us know someone who has battled it. Some of us have lost teammates, family members and friends to it."
Fundraising Impact
Money raised will be helping to fund life-saving research, support men and families facing diagnosis, raise awareness about early detection and encourage more men to get checked.
Join the Event
Players past and present and anyone who wants to support the cause are encouraged to join the ride or cheer on the team. After the ride a family fun afternoon full of celebrations at Blue Flames includes charity competitions, bouncy castles, food and refreshments with more surprises in store.
