Firefighters are tackling a major heathland blaze at Dunwich Heath in Suffolk, with a major incident declared due to the size and complexity of the fire. The fire is spreading south-west towards St James' Church, off Westleton Road, near the Sizewell B nuclear power station.
More than 90 firefighters are on the scene, working in arduous conditions. The public have been advised to stay away from the area, keep roads clear for emergency vehicles, and close windows and doors if smoke is nearby.
Response and Warnings
Station manager Dan Davis of Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said: 'Crews from Leiston attended the scene and were met with what is a large-scale, wind-driven forestry fire. The incident has subsequently been upgraded to a major incident.' He added that firefighters would remain until the fire is under control.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued an amber heat-health alert for the East Midlands, East of England, South East and London, in effect until 9am on Thursday. The agency has warned that rising temperatures could pose health risks, especially for vulnerable people.
Wildfire in Scotland
In Scotland, emergency services have reported significant progress in controlling a wildfire in the Cairngorms that started two weeks ago. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) Deputy Assistant Chief Officer Michael Humphreys said: 'It's been an absolutely devastating fire for wildlife and for the local community who have come out in force to really support us, which we really do appreciate.' He noted that a number of fire breaks have been put in place to control the blaze.
