The UK is experiencing its fourth heatwave of 2026, with temperatures forecast to hit 34°C. Cat owners are being urged to take precautions to keep their feline friends safe and comfortable.
Vet recommends keeping cats indoors
A veterinarian from Green Pastures Vets advises that on exceptionally hot days, owners should “ideally keep them inside where it's a little bit cooler.” Cats should have “lots of access to water” and “lots of access to litter trays so they don't have to go outside if they don't want to.”
The top recommendation is to purchase a cooling mat, allowing cats to lie on it at their leisure. For rabbits and other small furry mammals, the vet suggests freezing bottles of water, wrapping them in towels, and placing them in hutches. Animals also need plenty of shade and water from both bowls and bottles.
Sun protection for pale cats
The RSPCA warns that white cats and those with pale ears and noses need extra sun protection to avoid sunburn and future skin problems. However, some sunscreens contain perfume that can bother cats' sensitive noses or toxic chemicals that may harm pets.
When choosing pet-safe products, owners should select a suncream of at least factor 30. The charity recommends going slow: “Spend a few days getting them used to the bottle. Let them look at it and sniff it while giving them treats.” Start by squeezing a pea-sized amount onto your hand and wiping a thin layer onto the front and back of both ears, concentrating on the sticking-up part. For the nose, apply an equally thin layer to the furry top part.
After applying, distract your cat to prevent licking. The RSPCA notes: “Your cat will soon learn that sunscreen sessions are quickly followed by yummy treats, fun play or a fuss.” Crucially, make sure your cat has plenty of shade and water on hot days, sunscreen or not.
