Yellow pillow stains, a common nuisance especially during hot weather, can be effectively removed with hydrogen peroxide, according to cleaning expert Lynsey, known as the Queen of Clean. The stains are caused by sweat, body and hair oils, skincare products, and saliva soaking into the fabric over time.
How to Remove Yellow Stains with Hydrogen Peroxide
In a TikTok video shared with her 161,000 followers, Lynsey demonstrated the method: “How to remove yellow stains from your pillow. Hydrogen peroxide. Liberally spray the stains, then leave for 15 minutes. Fill a dish brush with water, scrub the pillow. Pop into the tumble dryer. Stain free and full of bounce.”
Hydrogen peroxide is a gentle bleaching agent that breaks down the body oils and sweat causing yellow stains. For best results, mix equal parts of 3% hydrogen peroxide and water. Dab or spray the mixture directly onto the stains, let it sit for 15 minutes, then wash as normal. The substance can also remove stains from mattresses.
Where to Buy Hydrogen Peroxide in the UK
Hydrogen peroxide is readily available in the UK for household, first-aid, or cosmetic use. Common retailers include Boots, Superdrug, eBay, and Amazon.
Why Do Pillows Turn Yellow?
Pillows turn yellow due to the buildup of bodily fluids and oils. Sweat, drool, skincare products, and natural skin oils seep through the pillowcase over time. When these liquids mix, break down, and oxidise, they leave yellow stains. Going to bed with damp hair forces excess moisture into the pillow’s filling, which can also cause musty odours. Using a zip-up pillow protector under the standard pillowcase can catch oils before they reach the pillow.
Additional Cleaning Tips
For other cleaning hacks, water marks on shower screens can be removed using a refillable Dishmatic brush filled with equal parts washing-up liquid and white vinegar, with a 568ml bottle of vinegar costing just 35p at Tesco.
