A dispute has erupted on the Huddersfield narrow canal between boaters and homeowners over the operation of lock 20W near Greenfield, with both sides citing serious problems caused by water levels.
Boaters Grounded by Low Water
Boaters report that low water levels are causing them to run aground. Adam Byram described being stuck in the middle of the canal, unable to move, and had to ask a passerby to open a paddle to refloat his boat. He expressed concern that unauthorized individuals are interfering with locks, potentially damaging boats and wasting water resources.
Michelle Beddow-Green, a liveaboard boater, said the low water levels affect her daily life, sometimes preventing her from opening her doors or hatches. David Murray added that his boat is being damaged by repeated grounding on the canal bed.
Homeowners Plagued by Sewage
Residents, however, say that when the lock is full, sewage from a nearby pumphouse overflows into their homes. One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, described having sewage back up into his bath. He has been placing homemade signs on the lock asking boaters to leave the paddle up to prevent flooding.
The resident, an 80-year-old retired gardener, admitted to using a windlass to open the lock gates. He said his signs were based on an official Canal & River Trust template, but boaters have been tearing them down.
Canal & River Trust Response
The Canal & River Trust (CRT) acknowledged an ongoing issue at lock 20W, which is Grade II-listed. They stated that when the lock is left full, water leaks into the cellar of an adjacent cottage. The trust has carried out grouting and installed pumps to mitigate leaks.
CRT confirmed that an official sign asks boaters to leave the lock empty, and additional signage will be installed. They attributed recent low water levels to increased boat traffic for the 25th anniversary of the canal's restoration, not to paddles being left open.
The trust urged all parties to respect official advice signs and said they will continue to monitor the situation.
