Hampstead Heath Ponds Warning Issued as New Heatwave Hits
Hampstead Heath Warning Issued as Heatwave Returns

The City of London Corporation has issued a warning to visitors of Hampstead Heath as a new heatwave approaches, urging responsible behaviour following a series of unsavoury incidents during last month's Bank Holiday heatwave.

Incidents During May Heatwave

On May 25, a fight broke out at the Parliament Hill Fields Lido, resulting in two arrests. One person was taken to hospital after being hit with a glass bottle, and a staff member's vehicle was significantly damaged. A second altercation occurred on May 28 in the queue outside the lido, with additional incidents involving swimmers on the premises. Shocking videos circulated online showing crowds entering two non-swimming ponds, disturbing local wildlife and appalling the public.

New Security Measures

In response, the Corporation has deployed additional security and patrols across the Heath, focusing on the lido and Model Boating Pond. New measures for the lido include mandatory ID for entry, a ban on anyone under 16 without a parent or guardian, random bag searches, and extra security staff during hot weather. Fires and barbecues remain strictly prohibited.

Alderman Gregory Jones KC, Chair of the Hampstead Heath, Highgate Wood and Queen's Park Committee, stated: “As well as our own constabulary, we’ve put additional security and patrols in place across the Heath, particularly around the lido and Model Boating Pond. Fires and barbecues are strictly prohibited due to the very real risk they pose to people, wildlife, and the wider landscape. We want everyone to enjoy the Heath, so please behave responsibly, and respect the space and those who care for it. Every visitor is also a ‘Heath Guardian’.”

Rules for Swimming

Only the lido and the three designated bathing ponds are permitted for swimming; all other ponds are reserved for wildlife. The Corporation warns that those who flout the rules risk fines or arrest. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the Heath responsibly as the warm weather returns.
