Christopher Hope, from Consett, County Durham, has lost 6 stone (6st) in less than nine months after a hospital scan revealed he had hypertension. The 22st 11lbs man had turned to comfort eating following the death of his mother in 2017 and a subsequent autism diagnosis.
From grief to weight gain
After his mother passed away, Christopher struggled to cope with daily life. He was later diagnosed as autistic, which compounded his anxiety. Relying on takeaways for comfort, his weight climbed to 22st 11lbs.
An ECG scan at the hospital showed he had hypertension, a condition that can lead to heart disease and stroke. This served as a wake-up call. “I’ve not only lost weight, I’ve gained confidence, friendships, and a whole new outlook on life,” Christopher said.
Joining Slimming World
Christopher joined a local Slimming World group, initially feeling nervous but determined. He lost 6.5lbs in his first week. Over the next nine months, he replaced takeaways with home-cooked meals and became more active. He also joined a craft club, which helped rebuild his social life.
His Slimming World consultant, Dawn Ferguson, said: “Christopher’s journey is a powerful example of what can happen with the right support and determination. Chris couldn’t make eye contact as he was so shy when he joined our group but after a few weeks, you could see his confidence soaring. He is sharing his success all over social media every week and everyone waits for his weekly updates. I am very proud of him.”
Impact of the transformation
Christopher now weighs 16st 11lbs, having shed 6st. He describes the diagnosis as the catalyst he needed. His story highlights how health scares can lead to positive lifestyle changes, even in the face of grief and neurodiversity.
