Greggs Shuts London Shops as Heatwave Reaches 37C

Greggs has announced the temporary closure of 11 stores across the UK, including two in London, as the capital braces for a scorching 37C heatwave. The bakery chain cited the need to protect customers and colleagues during the extreme weather.

Closures in London and Beyond

In an email to customers, Greggs confirmed that the affected shops would be closed on Wednesday 24th and Thursday 25th June. The list includes outlets in Barnet and Leicester Square in London, along with Wantage, Aldridge, Wolverhampton, Luton, Trowbridge, Marlborough, Dudley, and Northampton.

Red Heat Health Warning

The closures come as a red heat health warning was issued for London and other parts of the UK, effective from 9am on Wednesday until midnight on Thursday. With temperatures forecast to reach 37C, many schools, shops, and restaurants have also shut, and hundreds of thousands of people have been advised to work from home.

London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan urged residents to take precautions, saying: “Extreme heat poses a serious risk to health. Please prioritise safety: stay hydrated, avoid being out in the sun, and check on vulnerable neighbours.”
