Firefighters in France are working against the clock as a new heatwave threatens to push temperatures to 40C, complicating efforts to control wildfires that have forced more than 200,000 people to evacuate. The blaze, which has devastated thousands of hectares in the Gironde region, was stabilised overnight but not extinguished.
Heatwave Warning Issued
Meteo-France has placed the Gironde and Landes departments under a yellow "heatwave" warning starting at noon, alongside over a dozen other departments in eastern France. The rising temperatures are expected to heighten fire risks.
Mayor Describes 'War' Against Fire
Manuel Martinez, the mayor of one of the hardest-hit towns in Gironde, described the situation as a "raging fire that we are learning to understand." Calling for more resources, he added: "We are at war with an enemy."
