More than 220,000 people have been evacuated from their homes across France as wildfires rage, marking the biggest peacetime evacuation in the country's history.
Evacuations in Bordeaux
The Guardian's Paris correspondent Angelique Chrisafis reports from Bordeaux, the historic centre of winemaking country, as the flames approach the outskirts of the city. Evacuees are camped in hangars in the city centre, waiting to know when they can go home.
Wildfires across Europe
Wildfires are also raging across Greece, Italy, Spain and Turkey, raising questions about whether such scenes are now to be expected in Europe every summer.
