Locals were left absolutely gobsmacked after fish plummeted from the heavens during a ferocious storm in Yoro, Honduras. Hundreds of tiny fish materialised across roads, on terraces and throughout fields amid torrential downpours on Tuesday evening (June 9). Villagers dashed outside – some clutching containers – to gather the fish as the deluge subsided around 6pm.
Pictures captured people collecting the writhing creatures, which many hailed as a divine gift and a treasured element of local heritage. The extraordinary weather phenomenon unfolded in the Centro Poblado district of Yoro. One resident said: "My dear Yoro, blessed miraculously from the sky. Thank you God for this wonderful event of your greatness and power."
Another local added: "There is no doubt, it is not a myth, it is a reality. I have personally collected fish there and eaten them." The occurrence, dubbed the "lluvia de peces" by locals, usually happens between May and July throughout the wet season and has been documented for more than a century, attracting global fascination.
Yoro sits well inland, miles from the shoreline, deepening the puzzle of how freshwater species appear following severe weather. Explanations range from water funnels hoisting them from remote waterways or lakes, to fish surfacing from underground water sources forced up by floods, though scientists remain baffled by the spectacle.
Many credit it to divine intervention connected to 19th-century Spanish priest Manuel de Jesús Subirana, who is believed to have prayed for sustenance for the impoverished during a period of starvation. Residents regard each instance as an ongoing miracle. The spectacle has transformed Yoro into a cultural and tourism magnet.
The yearly Festival de la Lluvia de Peces showcases processions, cuisine and festivities that emphasise the event's importance. For households, it also offers the practical advantage of fresh fish for cooking. No casualties or significant damage from the storm were recorded, though electrical blackouts impacted sections of the region.
