Firefighters battle wildfires in France and Spain

Firefighters in France and Spain are racing to contain wildfires that have forced hundreds of thousands of people to evacuate, with another heatwave expected this week.

'Completely exceptional' fires in France

French authorities have described this year's wildfires, particularly the Gironde fire near the south-western city of Bordeaux, as 'completely exceptional'. Since the beginning of the year, more than 116,000 hectares of forest and vegetation have burned, compared with 70,000 hectares in total last year.

The blazes, exacerbated by drought and high temperatures, have strained firefighting resources across both countries. In Spain, several large fires remain active, prompting further evacuations.
