The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued a new alert for UK holidaymakers in Spain, following the declaration of a national emergency due to wildfires in parts of Madrid and Ávila. The warning comes as millions of Brits are expected to visit the popular European destination this year.
FCDO Alert Details
In an alert released on Friday afternoon (July 24), the FCDO stated: "Spanish authorities have declared a national emergency because of wildfires in parts of Madrid and Ávila. There are also reports of wildfires in other inland areas of Spain." The office advises anyone in affected areas to follow instructions from local authorities and emergency services, avoid travelling to or through affected zones, check updates from emergency services, and call 112 if emergency help is needed.
Wildfires Also Affecting France
Similar wildfires are occurring in France, particularly in Gironde in south-western France, impacting regions around Le Porge and Lège-Cap-Ferret. French authorities have evacuated several campsites and tourist accommodations, with the FCDO warning that access to these areas may be limited and road closures could be implemented at short notice. Wildfires are common in Spain and France, especially during the summer months.
