Expert Tips For Keeping Kids And Pets Safe In UK Heatwave

Britain is bracing for another scorching weekend as a 'truly historic spell of May weather' continues, according to the Met Office. Temperatures have already shattered records, with Kew Gardens reaching 35.1C on Monday, surpassing the UK's previous May record of 32.8C. Saturday is forecast to reach 29C across England and Wales.

To stay safe, drink plenty of fluids and avoid the sun between 11am and 3pm. The UK Health Security Agency advises walking in the shade, applying sunscreen regularly, and wearing a wide-brimmed hat. Check on vulnerable people, including those aged 75 or older and those with serious health conditions.

For babies, use sunscreen with SPF at least 30 and keep them out of direct sunlight, especially those under six months. Sleep consultant Rosey Davidson suggests placing frozen water bottles in front of a fan or hanging a wet towel to cool the air. Babies can sleep in just a vest or nappy if it's very hot.

To keep children entertained indoors, Save the Children recommends dressing up, making dens, or painting. A paddling pool in the shade can also help. Stick to regular bath and sleep times to maintain structure, and answer children's questions openly to reduce stress.

For pets, ensure they have constant access to fresh water and shade. Never leave them in a parked car, even with windows open, as temperatures can rise rapidly. Walk dogs early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid the hottest part of the day.
