Cool Your Home Fast After UK Heatwave Using 'Flushing' Method
Cool Home Fast After Heatwave with 'Flushing' Method

The UK has endured a week of scorching temperatures, with the mercury hitting 40C and a red weather warning covering much of the nation. After restless nights and uncomfortable commutes, the heatwave is finally expected to ease tonight. To capitalize on the temperature drop and improve your chances of a good night's sleep, you can use the 'flushing' method to rapidly cool your home.

What is the Flushing Method?

The flushing method involves expelling hot, stagnant air trapped inside your home and encouraging cooler air to flow in. The key is to wait until the outdoor temperature falls below the indoor temperature. Then, open windows on opposite sides of your property to create a cross breeze that pushes warm air out. If you have a loft hatch, open it as well—since hot air rises, this acts like a chimney, drawing warmth outside.

Optimize Your Fan Placement

Many people instinctively point a fan directly at themselves, but this is not the most effective way to cool down. Instead, place a fan a few feet away from an open window and angle it outward. This draws hot air out of the room. For added effect, position a second fan on the shadier side of the property, in front of an open window but angled inward. This pulls cooler air inside.

Reduce Heat Sources

To further regulate your home's temperature, unplug any appliances you are not actively using. Televisions, computers, and chargers generate ambient heat even when switched off, so unplugging them completely can help. Avoid using the oven during hot weather, as it will only warm your home. Opt for lighter, cooler meals or consider cooking outdoors instead.
